Latimer Hill Gravestone Inscriptions

Lot 2 - DAVID FILLEY, DAVID ALDERMAN

The first stone on Lot 2 has been broken.

The second stone reads:

“Miss. Mary Ann Filley ; born; Feb. 11, 1801; Died; March 18, 1866; Aged 65”

Daughters of Nancy and David Filley

David Haskell Filley was the son of David and Jerusha Rowley Filley.  He married Nancy loomis in March 1828 and they resided in the paternal homestead. Their two infant daughters are buried in this lot.

“Susan L., Daughter of David H. and Nancy Filley; Died Nov 12, 1837; Aged 1 year and 2 months”

Maria and Seymour Hills

The Hills stones are joined together.  On the top ridge, over Maria, the word “MOTHER” is etched; over Seymour, “FATHER”.  The inscriptions read:

“Mother; Maria Hills; Died Dec. 28, 1900, aged 80 years”

“Father; Seymour H. Hills; Died Feb 25, 1900; age 84 years”

Infant Sons of Abel and Amanda Fitch

A stone with two weeping willows pictured on it denotes the Fitch Infants. The inscription reads:

“Edwin and Edmund; infant sons of Abel and Amanda F. Fitch; Died May 8, 1834; aged 6 days”

These infants are probably the sons of Amanda Filley, daughter of Elijah and Ruth Barber Filley and her husband Abel E. Fitch.  Amanda and Abel were married in 1833 and Stiles’ genealogy reports they moved to Michigan.  Amanda, was sister of Elijah Edmund, buried in Lot 6.

Infant David

There is a tiny stone, marked: “David, 2nd, Died July 8, 1835.”
No further identification is known.

“Hattie M. Hills , Wife of William A. Newton; March 30, 1860; March 6, 1951”

“William A. Newton; Co A 3 Inf. Conn. Vols.; Died Dec 29, 1907 Age 66”

“Joseph A. Newton; Dec. 1, 1899; Apr. 28, 1968”

“Grace L. Newton Harrison; Aug. 17, 1911; July 9, 1986”
