Latimer Hill Gravestone Inscriptions

Lot 10 - BILDAD ROWLEY

The Rowleys who are buried in Latimer Hill can trace their ancestry back to Samuel, son of Thomas, son of Thomas. The first Thomas, in 1662, probably resided on Eggleston Lot at Backer Row, Windsor. In 1682, he moved to Simsbury with his wife, Mary Denslow, whom he married in 1669.  This first couple had nine children. Thomas died in 1708.

The second Thomas, the son, married Violet Shepard Stedman of Hartford, in 1669. Their children are listed in the Wintonbury Church Records, so it is assumed that they lived in Wintonbury.

Thomas and Violet had a son, Samuel, born March 11, 1710. Samuel had eight children listed in the Wintonbury Church Records. The fifth child, Silas was born December 2, 1759, was a Captain in the Revolutionary War, and is buried in Lot 17.  His history will be covered in the writings about Lot 17.  Samuel's third child, Job, was born April 15, 1752. Job was the father of this man in Lot 10, Bildad Rowley. Samuel died in 1811 at the age of 101.

Job, son of Samuel, grandson of Thomas, great grandson of Thomas, married Ruth Loomis of Torrington and they resided in Wintonbury. Children listed in the Wintonbury Church Records, all baptized on July 20, 1800 except for Amy and Naomi, are:
   JOB, born 1787
RUTH, born 1789, married Hooker Clark
AMY, born 1791, died about 5-years-old
NAOMI, born 1794, died two years later
   BILDAD, (Captain), born 1795
   LOOMIS, born 1797
   ________, died 1809, age 7

CAPTAIN BILDAD ROWLEY

Bildad, born August 17, 1795, married (1) the widow Clarissa (Latimer) Shepard in 1818.  They had two children:
HEZEKIAH LATIMER, born February 20, 1819, buried in this lot.
GEORGE WASHINGTON, born September 12, 1821, buried in this lot.
Clarissa died in 1835. Bildad married (2) Nancy Wells.  They had a son,
EDWARD B., buried in this lot, also.

Bildad, although he is referred to as Captain, was a Lieutenant in the War of 1812.  He was in Company E, Brainerd's Regiment. It is assumed he gained the Captain's rank in the militia.
Bildad died June 12, 1884 at the age of 89.  He is buried next to his two wives.

Bildad Rowley Inscription
" Bildad Rowley, Died June 12, 1884, Age 89"

It is interesting to note that the inscription on the stone for Bildad is facing East; the writing on the stones for his two wives and child is facing West.

(George Washington Rowley is the son of Bildad and Clarissa.  He married Rebecca Latimer, daughter of Chauncey and Polly Latimer, in 1846.
